Seconds Count: Important tips for pool safety
Profile Information
INTEX Corp. is committed to promoting swimming pool safety rules by delivering these important safety guidelines to everyone before assembling a swimming pool and stepping into the water.

With nearly 250 child related drowning accidents each year, owing a pool comes with a greater responsibility for swimming pool safety rules.  Everyone in the household should be aware of these swimming pool safety rules and guidelines.  It is the pool owner's responsibility to share these swimming pool safety rules to guests and children before it is safe to go in the water.  These tips are important and can save one's life.

Swim for fun.  Swim for confidence.  Swim for memories.  Swim for life.

    • Learn to swim. The best tip to stay safe in or around the pool is for
everyone - adults and children - to be able to swim

    • Isolate your pool to gaurd it from unsupervised access: fences should        completely surround your pool

    • Gates should be self closing and self latching and make sure to use            alarms that lead to the pool  - these should be without reach for children

    • Flexible pool covers are not safety covers and have entrapped
children DO NOT rely on them to prevent drowning

    • Keep objects that may attract and tempt children to climb or play in the
     pool unsupervised

    • Closely supervise children and those who are not able to swim

    • Keep a phone and rescue equipment such as poles and floats close by       in case of an emergency

    • Learn CPR. It never hurts to be prepared for any type of situation.

    • Post rules about the pool and make sure everyone is aware of the
     guidelines of the pool

Swimming Safety:

Swimming pools are great for having fun in the sun and creating beautiful summer memories for a lifetime to come.  That is why having a swimming pool is such a valuable recreational toy for families in the modern age.  But along with a swimming pool comes an added risk for children.  Be sure your pool is child-safe and that your children know the rules of safety before introducing a swimming pool to your home environment.

There are many safety precautions we take as adults and parents to ensure safety around swimming pools.  Fences, floatation devices, and constant supervision come to mind.  But still, each year, accidents do occur at alarming rates.  As preventative measures go, is there more we can do to keep our kids safe?

Saving lives:

Even just a few swim lessons can save a child’s life!  Children lose their inborn ability to swim within three short months of being born.  This means that before three months, most infants instinctively know how to survive if thrown into a swimming pool—float.  After three months, children must often be retrained on how to achieve this natural floating technique in order to survive in a body of water.  Children at any comfort level can learn to love water and learn to swim relatively quickly and easily with these swimming pool safety rules.

Private lessons are important because a child can be coached into a fully independent method of floating, one-on-one—correctly and quickly.  The complete technique of jumping into the water, finding the surface, and relaxing on the back in the perfect position for achieving a safe and comfortable float can take many repetitions to master.

Swimming tips for kids:

  • Sing nursery rhymes to your child as you introduce them to the environment of a swimming pool.

  • Blow in their face and mirror the actions of holding the breath before dunking the child underwater.

  • Give a child goggles so they can see underwater as they are learning to swim—it makes the transition from air to water smoother.

  • Allow children to fast for between 30 minutes and one hour before swimming.  In a private lesson, swallowing pool water through the nose and mouth can cause some children to regurgitate undigested food.  It happens sometimes, but can be easily avoided.

  • Know the depth of the pools you use and be careful where and how children are allowed to enter the pool.  Jumping and diving can be dangerous and increase risk.

  • Swimming in natural bodies of water, such as rivers, lakes, and oceans can greatly increase risk-factors, so try to stay in safety zones of clear, smooth water with marked lifeguard towers.  At the beach, always observe which flags are posted at lifeguard towers and ask a lifeguard what they mean before going into the water.
